It’s very forward with the Citra and Mosaic hops, meaning there’s probably an immense load of “dry-hops,” or hops added during/after fermentation. The nose is sweet and thick, with intense hop aromatics ranging from tropical fruit (papaya and mango) to bright, sticky citrus (grapefruit/tangelo, orange pulp) with a little bit of piney resin in there. It’s a looker, as long as you are a dedicated fan of New England IPAs. The legs are nice, too, with the suds left behind by the dissipating collar remaining fully connected to the main body of the beer. The pour is an opaque, hazed-over orange color with a dense, thick head of bone-white foam that leaves behind excellent, consistent lace. Sounds simple, for sure, but this beer tastes a lot better than many beers of a similar caliber with similar recipes and ingredients. And so is this beer.įlume is a New England-style double IPA hopped with Citra and Mosaic. I’m not kidding when I say you could spend a whole afternoon just at these breweries alone, and you’d basically be bar-hopping down a single street (actually, it’s more like a plaza). BS are a brewery located on Industrial Way in Portland, Maine, a street that is pretty much “brewer’s row,” home to Allagash, Foundation, Austin Street, and Definitive brewing companies. I think I’ve actually found cans of this with less than a week on them before, too, which is pretty unbelievable and a great selling point for these guys. That simple interlude brings us to Battery Steele’s Flume, which was canned exactly two weeks ago the day I opened it. So when I see great IPAs that are less than two weeks old, I tend to get pretty excited. Proceed with caution.Fresh beer is one of the best things in this world, especially fresh hoppy beer, and it’s something I don’t take lightly or for granted. The bitterness really isnt that bad, but it''s definitely there. If you want a hop smackdown - if you want all that sticky dank weedy resin in liquid form - if you want a big, bitter, creamy, New England hop bomb, then this is it. Overall, this is not to be taken lightly. And then becoming substancially drying in the finish. First beer that spot on reminds me of cannabis flowers. Hop flavors ultimately terminate to piney, resinous bitterness that lingers through the finish. The malt does provide sweetness, but the massive hopping almost makes you forget. So much hop resins, it's sticky on the lips. Super resinous, building into a moderate bitterness. Dank, cheesy, a herbaceous quality to the hops - not quite onion, but like a grassy/basil/leek character. Smells dank and sticky, like a sticky Afghan Kush. Some Summit/Simcoe action, maybe? Fainter notes of melon and strawberries. So much dank it almost reminds me of sharp white cheddar. Pours a super turbid milky orange julius yellow, with a fat finger of eggshell white fluffy head that recedes to patchy foam. Pint can dated 10/19/18 poured into a tulip. I will be going back tomorrow to get a 4 pack for sure. (well, haven't written that line before).

There is a moderate bitterness that creeps in half way through, lasting into the finish. Malt seems to be present as a backbone but the hops are crazy off the scale for me so I get no sense of it.įeel is very soft and creamy in texture. A mellowing allows the light sweetness to catch up, adding in some tangerine and eventually mango and orange flavors by the finish. It is a rich citrus bomb.įlavor is also lemon and lime up front. Very nice presentation.Īroma is dense with lemon-lime and orange zest. A three finger soapy head rises quickly and retains fairly well, leaving light ring lacing. Pours very cloudy and fluffy, almost opaque golden cream color. Note: I believe this beer is "green" at tasting, so it is likely to be more intense than, say, in a few weeks.
